Interceptor Drains in Iowa

An interceptor drain is a targeted subsurface drain that runs along the contour of a slope to catch groundwater moving downhill — stopping it before it ever saturates the ground below. It's the cleanest fix for a seeping hillside, a wet field edge, or a foundation that keeps taking on water from upslope.

Water moving through the soil downhill doesn't stop at your property line or your field edge — it keeps traveling until something intercepts it. An interceptor drain placed along the contour cuts across that flow, collects the water into perforated pipe, and carries it to a safe outlet before it reaches the ground you're protecting.

Getting an interceptor drain right is all about reading the slope and the water source. We identify where the subsurface water is coming from, run the drain along the right contour line, and set the grade so the water keeps moving instead of sitting in the trench. Wrapped in clean aggregate and filter fabric, it works quietly underground for years with no surface evidence it's there.

If you've got a hillside that seeps, a field edge that never dries, or a building taking on water from ground upslope, an interceptor drain is often the most direct answer. We install interceptor drains for farms, homes, and commercial properties across Eastern Iowa, from Iowa City to Dubuque. For broader surface collection around a foundation or yard, see our French & interceptor drain installation page.

How we handle it

  1. 1

Identify the upslope water source and the path it travels

  2. 2

Lay out the drain along the contour that intercepts the flow

  3. 3

Cut the trench and lay perforated pipe in aggregate with filter fabric

  4. 4

Route to a daylight or pop-up outlet and restore the surface
